The film stars Peter Boyle in a remarkable performance as Joe, a charismatic yet deeply bigoted blue-collar factory worker, alongside Dennis Patrick and Susan Sarandon in her first screen role.

The story follows wealthy NY businessman Bill Compton (Dennis Patrick) who accidentally murders his daughter's drug dealer boyfriend after she overdoses on heroin. He confesses the crime to Joe, and despite their vastly different backgrounds, the two men develop an uneasy alliance based around their shared fear and disdain of the counter culture, leading to devastating consequences.
