Independent Thinking Press - When the Adults Change, Everything Changes: Seismic Shifts in School Behaviour | Paperback

Paul Dix, behaviour training expert and director at Pivotal Education, challenges conventional behaviour management in schools by shifting the focus from student conduct to adult behaviour. This essential guide offers practical, transformative strategies tested across diverse educational settings, from challenging urban comprehensives to privileged international schools.

The book argues that traditional sanction- and exclusion-led methods are failing. Dix advocates for an inclusive approach where behavioural expectations are exemplified by staff, fostering an ethos built on kindness, empathy, and understanding, rather than relying on complex, easily forgotten rules.

• Upends the debate on behaviour management, focusing on adult accountability and control.
• Provides anecdotal case studies and scripted interventions for practical application.
• Advocates for building authentic practice on a stable platform, leading to shifts in daily routines and restorative practices.
• Offers indispensable advice for developing a whole-school ethos involving all staff members.
• Each chapter concludes with helpful checklists (Testing, Watch out for, Nuggets) to aid in blueprint creation.

Indispensable advice suitable for all head teachers, school leaders, teachers, NQTs, and classroom assistants across any phase or context, including SEND and alternative provision.
