Skinship by Alexandra Corrin-Tachibana

Dive into Skinship, Alexandra Corrin-Tachibana’s compelling second poetry collection, a sequel to the Salt bestseller, Sing me down from the dark. This bold and sensuous work explores themes of motherhood, female relationships, and partnerships, delving into complex dynamics with dark humor and poignant moments.

The collection draws its title from the Japanese 'loan word' fusing 'skin' and 'kinship,' referencing intimate connections. Corrin-Tachibana masterfully balances light and dark, weaving in hilarious observations, such as in the zuihitsu 'Madam Gout,' alongside tender reflections on her son and explorations of challenging relationships, including narcissistic abuse and cross-cultural dynamics.

Set against the backdrop of Japanese culture and heavily influenced by writers like Sei Shōnagon and Yoko Ono, Skinship features a witty, surreal sequence inspired by Ono, including the Artemesia prize shortlisted poem, 'How to Enjoy Kyoto.' The collection showcases innovative use of Japanese poetical forms like zuihitsu, haiku, and tanka, which Corrin-Tachibana makes uniquely her own.

Rooted in the author's lived experience in Japan and her love for its literature, the poems reflect her reconnection with the country after a 15-year hiatus. The visual appeal is enhanced by the use of Japanese language and script, and the collage-like layout of the zuihitsu, making Skinship a visually engaging and deeply resonant read.
