Zoh Amba - Eyes Full [VINYL]

Zoh Amba delivers their Matador debut album, “Eyes Full,” a collection of tough and soulful songs that feel like a pure transmission from the heart. Having established themselves as an exciting saxophonist in NYC’s avant-garde scene, Amba returns to their first instrument, the guitar, channeling the spirit of their hometown, Kingsport, Tennessee.

Musical Style and Recording

The music on Eyes Full is instinctively tied to its roots, featuring muddy, loose blues infused with sweet burnishes of Appalachian folk. The entire record was tracked live at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, without any overdubs, capturing raw, immediate performances. Amba is joined by best friend Kevin Hyland on electric guitar and drummer Jim White, whom Amba considers family. The trio rehearsed relentlessly to achieve tight, interwoven playing, with White and Amba interlocking while Amba handles rhythm and Hyland weaves in lead lines.

Themes and Impact

Eyes Full serves as a lesson in openness to the universe and the hearts within it. Through Amba’s perspective, the album aims to restore spirit and dignity to those often overlooked or dispossessed. The songs carry an ache for marginalized communities and those losing touch with their inner selves, insisting on sustained attention, meeting another person’s gaze, and refusing to look away.
